Many citizens would like to help their community in some facet. For some the pursuit of volunteer work allows them to make an impact on their community and finding personal satisfaction while still maintaining their own personal life. For others the calling to help community represents a full time level of commitment and is pursued by many with an interest in law enforcement.

Ranging from justice to law enforcement the legal system offers many levels of opportunity for an individual interested in community assistance. Many individuals are attracted to a career in law enforcement leading to their desire to discover how to become a police officer.   When learning how to become a police officer many individuals will find that the process starts with personal development.

Character represents the primary level of personal development that needs to be addressed when an individual is discovering how to become a police officer.   When learning how to become a police officer it will be revealed that the character of a person plays a strong role. Character is often a reflection of an individual and an assessment of those characteristics can assist a police department in determining the type of officer you will become.   A powerful characteristic that is often sought in an individual is loyalty. The role of loyalty can be seen in officers in their commitment to the force, their desire to help the community, their desire to protect the innocent and their compassion towards the victims.  

Honesty is the next characteristic that an individual should have developed in revealing how to become a police officer. As a pillar of the community and an example to all individuals honesty plays a large role in identifying a community’s trust in the police department. On many occasions if an individual is caught in a lie during the police recruitment phase of how to become a police officer they are immediately removed from the program, displaying the importance of honesty.

Another important development to attain in your pursuit in how to become a police officer is found in strength. Physical strength and mental strength are both styles of strength an individual must possess when learning how to become a police officer. Mental strength plays towards both the mental capacity of an individual as well as in the mental abilities of an individual.   Intelligence is an important characteristic of an individual as they are challenged by the criminal element on a daily basis.

In addition to intelligence an individual needs to be able to mentally handle the various situations they are placed in within their working environment. Individuals that have a history of crumbling under the pressures of life should identify this weakness prior to discovering how to become a police officer. Once the mental strength is assess the next area of characteristic lies in an individual’s physical strength.  

Physical strength plays a role in how to become a police officer in regards to an individual’s ability to compete with the criminal element.   Unfortunately the criminal element is made up of many different individuals at many different levels of health and if you are not in excellent physical condition you will not likely become an officer.
